From NYC Streets to SLC Eats: The Urban Gyro & Chicken Story
Late-night food carts in New York City operate on a very specific frequency: the sizzle of meat on a flat-top grill, the unmistakable aroma of bold Mediterranean spices, and the heavy drizzle of creamy white sauce over a steaming bed of rice. It is a culinary culture built on hustle, heritage, and massive flavor. For years, finding that exact rhythm and authenticity in Utah felt impossible.
That is exactly why Urban Gyro & Chicken was born.
The Vision Behind the Counter
Founded by Suvin Sukesh, Urban Gyro & Chicken started with a singular obsession: bringing the authentic, unapologetic street-side hustle of NYC to the Wasatch Front. Inspired by those late-night New York food carts, Suvin wanted to create a space that elevated the street food experience without losing its soul.
He set out to build a canteen rooted in respect for raw ingredients. What started as a modest single-countertop concept quickly caught fire. By combining heritage marinades, open-fire roasting, and a commitment to unhurried hospitality, Urban Gyro & Chicken evolved from a well-kept local secret into a beloved neighborhood fixture.
Our Culinary Pillars: 100% Halal, 100% Flavor
We don't cut corners on the craft. Every meal served at Urban Gyro & Chicken is built on a foundation of uncompromising quality and vibrant flavor profiles.
The Meats: Everything is 100% Halal certified and prepared fresh daily. From our hand-carved, spiced gyro meats to our sizzling marinated chicken and classic griddled ribeye steak.
The Platters: A true NYC-style street platter relies on the base. We use fragrant, seasoned basmati rice topped with crisp lettuce, fresh tomatoes, and warm pita wedges.
The Sauces: A gyro or platter is only as good as its sauce. We generously finish our dishes with our iconic, closely-guarded creamy garlic white sauce and a fiery red pepper harissa for those who want the heat.
City Speed Meets Community Hospitality
Street food is designed to be fast, but that doesn't mean it should lack warmth. We built our restaurants to be gathering tables for the community. Whether you are grabbing a quick stuffed samosa on your lunch break, picking up a loaded Philly Cheesesteak on a toasted hoagie, or bringing the family in for massive mixed platters, the energy is always welcoming.
The local community and culinary critics have embraced this balance. Salt Lake Dining Dispatch recently called our space a "casual landmark," praising the food as "the crispiest, most aromatic gyro and perfectly spiced chicken over rice to hit the Wasatch Front."
We brought the authentic heartbeat of Midtown cart-style food to Salt Lake City, and we are just getting started.
Come experience the crunch, the spice, and the sauce for yourself at our Regent Street or McClelland St locations today.
